Ingredients for Santa bread
- 3, 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Heat the milk in a small sauce pan to almost 100 F. Remove from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of the sugar.
Stir in the yeast and let stand about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile beat the eggs, the canola oil and the rest of the sugar with a hand beater until combine.
After 10 minutes the yeast mixture is foamy.
Pour the yeast mixture into the egg mixture and stir to combine.
Add the flour and salt. Stir with a spoon until the dough comes together.
Now knead the dough with your hands until the dough is smooth and elastic about 5 minutes.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it stand until the dough is doubles in size about 1 hours.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface.
1.Pinch off 2 pieces of the dough and roll them into 2 different sized balls. the larger one for the pompom of Santa’s hat and the smaller one for it’s nose.
2.Cut off a strip of the dough and roll it for the brim of Santa’s hat.
3.Cut off another piece of the dough and shape it like the picture.
4.Snip the dough evenly and spread the strips to form a mustache.
5.Place the dough on the lightly floured surface.
6.Roll out the dough like the picture.
7.Put the shaped dough on a prepared baking sheet. Use a scissor to cut the bottom of the dough to strips.
8.Twist each strips.
9.Fold over the top of the dough to shape the hat.
10.Place the larger ball over the tip of the hat.
11.Position the brim of Santa’s hat across the dough and fold the end under the sides of the dough.
12.Arrange the mustache and the nose on the dough.
13.Beat 1 egg yolk and 2 tablespoons milk with a hand beater to make an egg wash.
14.Brush the entire surface of the dough except the body of the hat with the egg wash.
15.Add red food coloring to the egg wash and stir to combine.
16.Brush the body of the hat with red egg wash.
17.Place the dough into the preheated oven to 350 F. Then bake for 20 minutes so until the bread is golden brown and cooked through.
18.Let the bread cool for 10 minutes. Cover the nose, the face and the hat of Santa’s with a paper towel or foil.
19.Dust the bread with icing sugar.
20.Remove the papers.
Put 2 chocolate chips on the face of the Santa’s to form the eyes.
Now your Santa bread is ready to enjoy…
